Remote and hybrid work are not going away, and neither are the security gaps that come with them. Once company data leaves the office network, a lot of the protections you have built up over the years stop applying automatically. A few practical habits close most of that gap.

Home Wi-Fi is not your office network

Most home routers are never updated after they are installed, and plenty are still running default passwords. Encourage employees to update router firmware, use a strong Wi-Fi password, and keep work devices off the same network as smart TVs and game consoles where possible.

Personal devices need the same rules as company ones

If employees are checking email or accessing files from personal phones and laptops, those devices need screen locks, up-to-date software, and a way to be remotely wiped if lost. A device with no rules is a device that is one lost bag away from a data breach.

VPNs and multi-factor authentication are non-negotiable

A VPN encrypts the connection between a remote device and your systems, and multi-factor authentication means a stolen password alone is not enough to get in. Together they close two of the most common ways remote accounts get compromised.

Have a plan for lost or stolen devices

Remote work means laptops and phones leave the building every day, which also means they get left in cars, airports, and coffee shops. Know in advance how you would remotely lock or wipe a missing device, and make sure employees know exactly who to call the moment something goes missing.

None of this requires exotic technology, just consistent basics applied outside the office the same way they are applied inside it. The businesses that get hurt are usually the ones that never wrote the rules down in the first place.
